“This feast of a book . . . will captivate readers from its opening double-page spread. . . . Sweeping and grand, this personal take on a familiar story is an engaging success.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Leaving the docks of London on the Mayflower as an indentured servant to Pilgrim John Carver, John Howland little knew that he was embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. By his great good fortune, John survived falling overboard on the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, and he earned his keep ashore by helping to scout a safe harbor and landing site for his bedraggled and ill shipmates. Would his luck continue to hold amid the dangers and adversity of the Pilgrims’ lives in New England? P.J. Lynch captures this pivotal moment in American history in precise and exquisite detail, from the light on the froth of a breaking wave to the questioning voice of a teen in a new world.

The Boy Who Fell Off the Mayflower or John Howland Good Fortune P J Lynch 9781536202960 Books Reviews

  • I purchased this book last spring while waiting for it's release in September. The story is about my 10th great-grandfather, John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower. It's a great read for 4th and 5th graders. The pictures are where I was introduced to the paintings of P.J. Lynch...they are spectacular! The fact that this book is about my ancestor makes it that much more exciting. This should be in every middle school so kids can read something exciting that they can relate to concerning the Mayflower.
  • This is a very nice book that we bought for my wife's two granddaughters as she is trying to spark their interest in their ancestor John Howland and the Mayflower Society. The story and wonderful art throughout the book are perfect for kids from 12 y.o. to 14 y.o.; Old codger that I am, even enjoyed reading this book. "The Boy Who Fell Off The Mayflower" is a great way to stimulate the interest of young people in our American heritage, even those of us who are not so fortunate as to have an ancestor on the Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact is our Magna Carta and all Americans regardless of when they arrived on our shores should embrace this document and the struggle to survive of the Pilgrims. It's our common history and this book is worthy of being read by all of us.
  • I ordered three paperback books and, after seeing them, I ordered three more. The book is very well written and factual except for perhaps lowering the age of John Howland by a few years. I was surprised the paperback version had such beautiful and colorful illustrations. I gave out five to children in the family and accompanied each book with an individual genealogy from John Howland on down to each individual child. They were such a big hit. The parents were thrilled also. They didn't know their heritage because I've learned to keep my "thrilling" genealogical findings to myself for fear of boring everyone. I also kept it to myself that John Howland has about two million other descendants.
  • I think this will become a favorite book in our home. The art is fantastic— P.J. Lynch is an incredible artist and I would buy any book he illustrates just for the beautiful work displayed therein.

The story keeps the reader engaged, feeling emotions John would have felt as he traveled with his master to the new world. There's a little epilogue at the end of the story that tells a bit more of his story- who he married and how many children/grandchildren he had so you aren't left hanging, wondering what happened after things settled down in America.
  • This book is well written, loosely based on fact. The photos add to the story although they are a little dark to see. I enjoyed it as the story is written about John Howland, who came on the Mayflower, and he is an ancestor of mine. It felt like I had a glimpse into his life although he lived so long ago. This book was written in such as way to add insight into what the pilgrims suffered through and just how brave they were. I recommend it - just maybe not for wee ones as the dark photos could be frightening and it is a long story.
  • Beautifully illustrated and a great read for Thanskgiving or year round especially for those with interest in the pilgrims. Highly recommended.
  • If you want to teach the story of the Pilgrims in an informative, engaging, narrative way, this is the living book for you. Great pictures throughout as well. This could stand alone on the subject for younger readers without any additional supplement resources.
  • This is a beautifully illustrated historical story. I am going to buy this book for other family members. If John Howland had not survived, our family would never have come into existence. My husband is also descended from a Mayflower passenger, making us doubly invested in the history of some of America's first immigrants.
