The Admirer Karelia StetzWaters Books Reviews

  • Well written but not my genre. Before this book, I never knew body integrity identity disorder existed. While it is a unique topic, I found it rather disturbing. However, the author, Karelia Stetz-Waters, makes it clear up in the first sentence of the blurb, “serial killer ‘makes’ perfect women by amputating their legs.” Guess I should not have picked up a serial killer book.

The pacing was good. Weaving the reason why Helen acted the way she did – her sister’s suicide – was brilliant and believable. I felt sympathy for Helen. As for Adair, I was split. Part of me was attracted to this eclectic character and another was turned off. You could say, the manner in which both characters engaged in sex was not my cup of tea as a lesbian. Might be others but not mine.

Regardless of the genre and characters, one downfall of the story was that I guessed the killer sooner than I would have expected.
  • Very intelligently written book. I personally loved it from page one. Incredibly intriguing and I absolutely loved the characters. One warning though, parts of this story were incredibly violent. No sexual violence but very descriptively violent in parts all the same. If this kind of thing bothers you, fair warning. I was thrilled to see that there will be a sequel to this in the future as well. I literally could not put it down. Highly recommend.
  • Intense, dark, gritty, intriguing, gripping are a few adjectives I'd use to describe this book. While I think of myself as being thick-skinned, there were parts that made me cringe, so be forewarned the book holds back no punches. I wasn't a fan of Helen for the most part, while I understood her tragic past I still felt like she was kind of flat. Adiar, on the other hand, was very interesting, probably one of the more intriguing characters I've read. I wanted to know more about her and her family so I was happy to see the next book was from her POV. This is definitely a must read for fans of thrillers.
  • What a nail biting, edge of your seat thrill ride! Wow. After reading her other romance novels I am surprised by the vivid pictures painted by Karelia in this book. Awesome read, couldn't put it down! Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach, great murder mystery with the addition of gay and lesbian characters. I loved it!
  • Who would have though this kind of fetish was a thing? Not me, but I was totally convinced and thoroughly enjoyed the who-done-it ride. Excellent read !
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's well written with an intriguing storyline. Personally I could not put it down, and had to follow it by reading Ms Stetz-Waters' other offerings. What a find!
  • Definitely creepy. Really enjoyed it!
  • The story line in this book is definitely unique. The author does a good job at introducing a unique "reason" as to the desire behind the dark crimes committed in the story. Unfortunately, that is where the gripping tale ends for me. I was unable to fully relate to the character development; especially the relationship between the two main characters. It seemed to be on the fast track, so to speak, I did not get much of a chance to develop feelings for the characters. And, despite the extensive vocabulary the author was able to incorporate, (which I thoroughly enjoyed) it was almost overwhelming, thus causing some confusion in both the dialogue and story development.

Despite the flaws, the story itself was a unique and interesting one, and for that, I applaud the author.
