Unafraid Moving Beyond FearBased Faith Benjamin L Corey Books Reviews
- This is going to sound very much like an exaggeration, but it isn’t. I think the character of Jesus is very much under attack by the religious right in this country and I am truly and profoundly grateful for brave voices who speak out on the authentic struggles inherent in truly following Christ, and the voices who encourage following Christ, and not some American Christian Jesus, but the truly hard and beautiful work of loving one another really. Thanks Ben, another beautiful work.
- I love this book, as it deals with what is to me a major difficulty with Christianity and its tenets; this being fear, which I believe most Christian churches especially "fundamentalists" instill in their believers, at least for me it has being true.. For me, and for the author the issue of fear has been a big stumbling block in life and I think this fear paralyzes people and prevent us from fully living and loving God. This book wants you to make a choice of being unafraid of God, and to make a conscious choice to believe that God is Love; period! So I would recommend this book for any Christian or others who ares struggling with fear, and I would recommend every person who reads this book, to believe that Jesus is the "only Word of God", therefore his teachings supersede everything else in the Bible. Jesus is the final revelation of "God's face" and therefore we have to be followers of Jesus, and no one else, we don't have to fit in with any church's doctrine, we are called to follow Jesus and to love our enemies and to love ourselves and our fellow human beings. Remember that "perfect love casts out fear", so fear and love are enemies, that is the main lesson for me.
- A MUST read for anyone who has questioned what the church teaches. This book is very informative about the history of the beliefs of the church and how what is taught today in most evangelical church's is very far from the early beliefs of Christians. I think chapter 4 exposes one of the deepest most dangerous lies that is believed in the Christian faith...This one truth has changed everything for me. Thank you Benjamin Corey for sharing your journey and what you have learned along the way. I pray the Christian faith will look more like Jesus in the years to come. Your book will help countless others as it has me!
- Dr. Corey takes us with him on his personal odessey from a Fundamentalist Christian childhood to a walk with Jesus as the center of his faith, continued, in his second book. His first, "Undiluted", gave us an undiluted Jesus, Jesus properly placed in his true surroundings and the customs and meanings of his time...and how our Bible readings have been misunderstood. This book adds more layers to our Biblical understanding, again, and corrects the notion that God is capable of the evil of...vengeance...violence...war...that these would be the acts of a "loving father". God is Love, not fear. God is awesome and beyond our full knowledge but says, "Do not fear."
It is a personal journey, well described, easy to read. - I became acquainted with Benjamin through his book "Undiluted". This book ("Unafraid") actually spoke loudest to me as I emerged out of fundamentalism years ago and evangelicalism about 12 years ago. His words described my journey to a T and it was all about refusing to be afraid any longer. I refused to be afraid of the Father. I refused to be frightened by the (empty) threat of hell. I lost many friendships when I left evangelicalism and it even affected my marriage but I could not remain AFRAID any longer because I was a at the point of risking my most important relationship - the one with Jesus. I was not willing to risk losing that most intimate of relationships.
I urge you to read this book, especially if there is something within you crying out that there has to be something more than a relationship built on fear. And grab "Undiluted" while you are at it. - So great to be able to read this book and hear honesty without all the hypocrisy of the current Christian Right, and regain my faith lost after the election of Donald Trump and have the courage to be UNAFRAID. It's so difficult to hear the hypocrisy of evangelicals and have faith that the world and my children and grandchildren will recover and thrive after Trump is gone. The divisions in our country that Trump has created and encouraged make it near impossible to think that the USA and we will ever be able to function again with LOVE. Politically living in this Trumpism world makes me afraid that I am going back to instinctual old fundamentalist taught fears and UNAFRAID has given me the courage to believe in what Jesus taught and lived with LOVE. LOVE not hate and fear.
- This is a great book for those of us who have questioned how Jesus is so loving, and God is so angry. I think so many of us who grew up with fear-based religion still have scars from it. This book gave such great examples of what God is not, that I think it can help heal those scars. We can see that God is loving, Jesus is loving, and we are supposed to love as well.
- This book is profoundly thought provoking. The author shares some of his personal experiences of growing up in a rural fundamentalism. He also clearly shows how Christianity based on love is far superior to the fear-based Christianity many are exposed to today. Christianity based on love is also the type of Christianity that Jesus intended. My favorite chapter—chapter 5 (Ending the End-Times Narrative)—gives a glimpse into historical perspective on one reason why modern day christianity has become increasingly fear based.
A captivating writing style, raw authenticity, and compelling evidence….it’s all found in this book. Get it, read it, share it….it will change your life!!
