The passionate new romance from E L James, author of the phenomenal number-one best-selling Fifty Shades Trilogy

London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he's never had to work, and he's rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family's noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It's a role he's not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.

But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who's recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she's an alluring mystery, and Maxim's longing for her deepens into a passion that he's never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he's been hiding secrets of his own?

From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the listener breathless to the very last moment.

"When you live paycheck to paycheck, it’s a real splurge to spend $10 on a book. But oh the disappointment when the books stinks! This book was juvenile and unbelievable. I hated the way the font would change and how you never really knew who was “speaking” because it may be a paragraph in first person and the next page may be in third person. Save your money and reread Fifty Shades if you need to read something by EL James."

The Mister Audible Audio Edition E L James Dominic Thorburn Jessica O'HaraBaker Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • at least with 50 Shades, the characters were relatable and had dimension. The whole plot was dialogue driven thus getting to know the characters, in The Mister I could care less about our two main people. I don't know about them, and i don't want to from the little i do know. It took forever with NO enthusiasm just to get to the place where he hears her play the piano even though you know he has to find out eventually.....
Plot is tedious. Holy Shmoly I don't even care how it ends.
  • This book was terrible. The characters had absolutely NO depth. It jumped around all over place and was full of plot holes. There were so many opportunities given the author has not released anything in the past 10years, I would have expected this to be a well thought out book, with loveable characters. Do yourself a favour and don’t bother with this book.
  • Where do I begin? Perhaps from the beginning? Alright, EL James was my very first read (and I mean i NEVER read books for fun or even when I had to for school). After reading the Fifty Shades Trilogy I was hooked on ROMANCE. So needles to say I AM A HUGE EL JAMES FAN and she got me started on reading romance!

I was so nervous to start reading this because I wasn't sure what to expect. It was NOT anything like I expected or didn't. I keep having to remind myself that this is not part of the fifty shades, it's a whole new..everything...and WHICH IT IS!! You can very much tell this is a EL JAMES book because of the writing, some words and the style. I have nothing to base this off of except as a NEW read, so it was rather shocking to me. This is VERY from the 3rd person narrated and you get both POV's. Younger heroine, age 23, older hero but not by too much. Maxim is a man of many talents, aside form being Earl of Travethick..photographer, DJ and a composer, among other things.

This to me aside from some IRONIC words used to reference fifty shades in the book, is a very MODERN PRIDE & PREJUDICE feel...with a twist. The ending about killed me, that was a rush! While reading you're constantly anxious to what will happen next. It's exhilarating. Edgy. Romantic. Stimulating. It grows on you. Just...beautiful.

I am rating this a 5 PLUS PLUS & HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! It is definitely making the TOP 2019 MUST READ list!

    H A P P Y - R E A D I N G!
  • First of all, these characters were awful. There was absolutely no depth to them and no growth.

Maxim went from having an affair with his brothers widow two days after he died to all of a sudden being infatuated with his maid.

Alessia went from being this shy timid maid who knew nothing to this nympho.

The plot did not flow at all and skipped all over. Then the ding was just BAM, it’s done. Won’t be reading anymore of her books that’s for sure.
  • I had to read this one because it’s written by E L James. I enjoyed the 50 Shades trilogy. So, this one should be good, right? Not! The story is far-fetched and difficult to believe. A Lord, who is one of the most handsome eligible bachelors, falls for his maid who is an illegal immigrant that can barely speak English. The relationship is all about chemistry. The only thing they seem to have in common is their love of classical music. Just not very interesting or believable.
  • I knew the author wasn't a great writer, but her 50 shades series had that certain something that would not let me leave one books unread. I just couldn't get enough of the main characters. In "The Mister," the authors lack of skill at story telling, is glaringly obvious. The plot is amateurish; the story preposterous and the writing juvenile. I picked up and put down this novel at least four times in one day. I just couldn't work up the interest to finish this book. It's going to collect dust as it slowly gets eaten by silverfish in my "to be read stack (TBR).
  • When you live paycheck to paycheck, it’s a real splurge to spend $10 on a book. But oh the disappointment when the books stinks! This book was juvenile and unbelievable. I hated the way the font would change and how you never really knew who was “speaking” because it may be a paragraph in first person and the next page may be in third person. Save your money and reread Fifty Shades if you need to read something by EL James.
  • Lacked the character depth, plot twists, and scene development that made us all fall in love with the Fifty Shades series. I left the book feeling very little respect for the main characters, not to mention couldn’t relate with them at all.

Wallis Simpson is known as the woman at the center of the most scandalous love affair of the 20th century, but in this surprising new biography, bestselling author Anna Pasternak redeems a woman wronged by history with new information revealed by those who were close to the couple—presenting Wallis as a convenient scapegoat to rid England of a king deemed unworthy to rule.

The story that has been told repeatedly is this The handsome, charismatic, and popular Prince Edward was expected to marry a well-bred virgin who would one day become Queen of England when he ascended the throne. But when the prince was 37 years old, he fell in love with a skinny, divorced American woman—Wallis Simpson. No one thought the affair would last, and when the prince did become king, everyone assumed the affair would end.

But instead the new king announced he wanted to marry the American divorcee, and Wallis was accused of entrapping the prince in a seductive web in order to achieve her audacious ambition to be queen. After declaring that he could not rule without the woman he loved at his side, the king gave up his throne, and his family banished him and his new wife from England. The couple spent the rest of their days in exile, but happy in their devoted love for each other.

Now, Anna Pasternak’s The Real Wallis Simpson tells a different story that Wallis was the victim of the abdication, not the villain. Warm, well-mannered, and witty, Wallis was flattered by Prince Edward’s attention, but like everyone else, she never expected his infatuation to last. She never wanted to divorce her second husband or marry Edward. She never anticipated his jealous, possessive nature—and his absolute refusal to let her go.

Edward’s true dark nature, however, was no secret to the royal family, the church or the Parliament; everyone close to Edward knew that beyond his charming façade, he was immature, self-absorbed, and uneducated—utterly unfit to rule. Wallis begged Edward to stay on the throne and let her go, foreseeing the verdict history would pass on her. Caught in Edward’s fierce obsession, she became the perfect scapegoat for those who wished to dethrone the king they feared to rule. On the night Wallis died, Princess Margaret told a friend, “It wasn’t her we hated, it was him.”

Rejecting the sinister schemer at the center of a dark royal fairytale, Anna Pasternak reveals Wallis Simpson as an intelligent woman, written off by cunning, powerful men and forced into a life she never wanted in a complex, riveting, and tragic true story of manipulation and betrayal.

The Real Wallis Simpson A New History of the American Divorcée Who Became the Duchess of Windsor eBook Anna Pasternak Reviews

  • While I agree with the author's attempt to un-demonize Wallis, and make her more sympathetic to history, I feel in some ways this book went way too far in the other direction. Honestly--the title should have been Saint Wallis, or something. Yes--she was a nice, charming, intelligent woman BUT there's no getting around the fact that she was ALSO a desperate, grasping social climber when she first met Edward, a woman who (nice person though she might be) became ADDICTED to the jewels and status he gave her--who couldn't really say no to him when he offered her his undying love. (Even when she was already married to a nice guy.)

I feel like the author breezes over the reasons WHY she was that way Wallis's childhood and romantic past before she met Edward--IE - her shame during her formative years at being the illegitimate poor relation of a very prominent Baltimore family, her first disastrous, abusive marriage and the disgrace she was in as a "divorcee" in an era where a woman's only power was the man she was married to, and an unrequited love affair after the end of her first marriage that ended badly. (Before Ernest, Walllis fell in love with a diplomat who rejected her because she wasn't good enough. This isn't even mentioned in the book)

No wonder she craved the King's power and money (but was actually bored by the man)! But it also explains why she didn't let the King go long before the relationship got too intense, and was unable to really reject him for long. Therefore she ended up being manipulated into a 35 year marriage to a spoiled boy-ex-King, and vilified by history.

During the marriage--Yes--she planned beautiful parties for him and decorated wonderful homes to make him happy , but at heart--the abdication made Wallis cruel and abusive towards Edward in their marriage because she was bitter and resentful about being trapped (also glossed over in the book.)

Explaining why these things happened would have made Wallis a much more interesting, complex, flawed and totally understandable HUMAN character. And frankly this would have been a much more enjoyable read. Saints are boring. Wallis's story deserved better.
  • Another book about Wallis and Edward? Haven't they published every known occurrence in their shallow, selfish lives?

Anna Pasternak, whose great-uncle was Russian writer Boris Pasternak, wrote a lovely book about his great love, Lara, which I loved. But she knew her information through family and friends of the family. Can anyone who knew the Windsors still be alive? Evidently, yes.

Yes, it is a re-hash of everything we have read before in numerous books over the years. There are a few tidbits I didn't know about that were revealed, but certainly nothing earthshattering.

It is what she didn't say that worries me. She writes about the war between the Queen Mother (Queen Elizabeth II's mother) and Wallis Simpson, but she leaves out an incident which poisoned the possibility of there ever being a truce between the two women that happened one day at Fort Belvedere. As Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Windsor walked into a room unannounced, she overheard Wallis doing a spot-on impersonation of her voice to a gaggle of guests. She stopped in her tracks, gave Wallis a frosty stare, and left. Did this happen? It is written about in numerous books.

When I was living and working in London in the late 60s and early 70s, I dated someone whose family knew the Duke & Duchess well. He brought it up casually one afternoon as we walked through Hyde Park. "I can assure you, there won't be a marriage between one of the royals and an American for some time. Perhaps never" he said. Well, 50 years later there was such a union. A royal prince to a divorced American woman with a ditzy family and a D-List acting background! I could hear Wallis cackling her head off as the two were wed. I call Meghan, 'Wallis's Revenge'! Sadly, she is going to have a tough row to hoe throughout her marriage to Prince Harry. He may have to abdicate his position in order to live a happy life with her and their family. I can see them living outside the royal family doing their own thing on their own. Surely this idea has not skipped Her Majesty's thoughts, as well. History repeating itself.

Ms. Pasternak also mentions the TV series, Edward & Mrs. Simpson, which I have watched over and over through the years. She speaks about what a wonderful job actor Edward Fox did playing the Duke, but fails to mention the incredible job Cynthia Harris does as Wallis. I can't understand how she omitted this, as the book is about her, as well. For me, Ms. Harris WAS Wallis Simpson. No one has come close to capturing her look and voice and probably never will.

Back to my English friend, Patrick. During our walk he told me that he knew, as gospel, the truth about Wallis Simpson will never, ever see the light of day. "My dear, you have NO idea who and what this woman really was! Thank God she came along and stole our King before Hitler could get a hold of him! Had she not, we would be speaking German today!" D. J. Taylor wrote a novel about Wallis dying just before they wed and what Edward's life would have been like as a single King. Entitled The Windsor Factor, it is well worth reading. Taylor has a breathtaking way with words.

If you were to stop one of the high school students who go to school next door to my building and ask them who Wallis and Edward were, not one of them would know who you were talking about. Ms. Pasternak's readership for this book is probably aged 60+. My own daughter, aged 45 wouldn't know who they were, nor would she care' I foolishly titled my review of Andrew Morton's book, 'The Sun Finally Sets On The Windsors.' I should have waited until this book came out.

While I enjoyed hearing the story over again, I think about what Patrick said so many decades ago that the truth will never, ever be revealed about both of them. I did not know that Edward was rendered sterile by mumps as a child or that she had a delicate sexual condition that made it impossible for her to have children. This was never mentioned in previous books. A perfect match, then, isn't it?

I closed the book tonight at 11 having spent most of the day reading it from cover-to-cover. Do these two people truly merit our interest after all these years? Not really. Most of what has been written is a fabrication by the authors to perpetuate a Disney movie scenario for the ages. The price they paid for their folly was beyond any sacrifice for love anyone has ever endured. Perhaps that is why their 'love story' endures.
  • This new biography of Wallis Simpson (which was published with the title "Untitled"in the UK which is much more appropriate) is a fascinating new insight into an historical character we think we know. The author succeeds in rescuing Wallis Simpson from the two-dimensional historical treatment she has largely received to date and reveals her as a complicated, intelligent and largely sympathetic character. This book is a woman's take on a story that until now has largely been told by men and it is fascinating. The biography reads like a novel; even though you know what happens you do not want to put it down as the story unfolds.
  • I've read pretty much every book about the DoW that has been published. This book adds nothing much new, and mostly takes it's material from the other books. No new insight.
  • I both loathed and pitied her as I read this book. Complaining about the privileged life they led was appalling to us ‘in-royals’
  • A more balanced picture of Wallis Simpson than has been given in previous books on the subject. I’m glad I bought and read this book.
  • Like most people, I believed the stories I'd heard about Wallis Simpson. Reading this book changed my mind about her. This was a very interesting read and I've donated my purchase to my local library.
  • Very informative book about Wallis and David. If you like books about the royal family and want to add to your knowledge, this book is for you. Enjoyed every page and learned a lot of backstory.

Ebook The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Powerful Lessons in Personal Change Stephen R Covey 8601419641499 Books

"This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. The fact that you're seeking it out says volumes about your level of self-awareness as it is and this book builds on that. Very seldom do books really make me get involved when I read them, but this book made me break out my highlighter and notepad. There was so much good stuff I just had to take notes I could quickly reference. You know how some books make you say things out loud? You'll read something and say, "YES! EXACTLY!" or read something profound and just sit dumbfounded, going "Wow," and you have to take a moment to reflect on it? This book is full of moments like that.

There is a lot of practical stuff in here, too. Challenges for you. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.

Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it."

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Powerful Lessons in Personal Change Stephen R Covey 8601419641499 Books Reviews

  • I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.

From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)

The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”

Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.
  • I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. It wasn't until I read the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, that the fog finally lifted. This book taught me why all those quick fixes don't work and how my happiness depended on my own internal work and efforts. I encourage anyone who is struggle with a similar situation or everyone for that matter to read this book. It'll change your perspective on life!
  • This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life.

You won't regret it.

- Anne-So-5, Booknode

46 Hours to Home A story of survival during the apocalypse eBook Pat Riot Reviews

  • This book deserves 5 stars. Great story, tons of prepper tips, etc. Unfortunately I had to deduct a star due to poor proofreading. I wanted to email the author a list of corrections, but no email, website, or Facebook page could be found. If the author reads this, please contact me so I can upgrade to the 5 stars it deserves. Wmhcheryl@gmail.com
  • A great story line and interesting characters, but the book desperately needs editing. For example ... constant references to rod iron rather than wrought iron, constant references to the brand of the backpack instead of just saying "back pack"; etc. The list is too long!
  • Great book. Hope to find more from this author. Love post apocalyptic fiction and this was very realistic. Amazing what a person can accomplish
  • I will be buying further books in the series in the future!
  • good characters, good story and looking forward to the next book...hurry
  • This book focused on the survival of one man after the EMP . A great description of where he was and what it took took for him to survive. I liked the way the main character came thru the crisis and didn't think of himself first.
  • A good book full of interesting information. Good character development and very well written dialogue. I enjoyed reading this book.
  • This book was the story of one man trying to get back home to his family after a massive EMP/Solar flare.
Overall, it was a very good book.Fast paced in some places and very well detailed. There were one or two places where it got a little long-winded in the descriptions, but overall a very good book!

Fool Talk Recovering the Art of Christian Persuasion Os Guinness 9780830844487 Books Reviews

  • is a book I have been hearing a lot about over the course of the last year and I was not disappointed in my reading of it. Through this book Guinness introduces the reader to the art of Christian persuasion. Persuasion—is perhaps the best way to view apologetics. Over time I have seen many followers of Jesus take varied stances on apologetics. Compelled by 1 Peter 315, personally for some time now I have been an advocate for apologetics, not so much from the sake of winning arguments but in our role of evangelism and the stewardship of relationships. This book does well to unpack the role of apologetics and it’s necessity in our day while addressing and avoiding common pitfalls that most fall into in navigating this challenging topic. Apologetics, and the persuasion that lies at its heart, is more important today than ever and a true missing link in our discipleship contexts.

We are all apologists now, and we stand at the dawn of the grand age of human apologetics, or so some are saying because our wired world and our global era are a time when expressing, presenting, sharing, defending and selling ourselves have become a staple of everyday life for countless millions of people around the world, both Christians and others. The age of the Internet, it is said, is the age of the self and the selfie. The world is full of people full of themselves. In such an age, “I post, therefore I am.” To put the point more plainly, human interconnectedness in the global era has been raised to a truly global level, with unprecedented speed and on an unprecedented scale. Everyone is now everywhere, and everyone can communicate with everyone else from anywhere and at any time, instantly and cheaply.

As the author states, our time and our context is perhaps the greatest opportunity for Christians and Christianity since Jesus and his apostles walked the earth. But what are we doing about it? “Many of us have yet to rise to the challenge of a way of apologetics that is as profound as the good news we announce, as deep as the human heart, as subtle as the human mind, as powerful and flexible as the range of people and issues that we meet every day in our extraordinary world in which ‘everyone is now everywhere’.”

Guinness asserts, we have lost the art of persuasion—the kind of persuasion we see modeled in Jesus, Paul, and the Old Testament prophets before them. Jesus especially had a remarkable ability to communicate to people disposed to reject him, and yet to do so in such a way that they had to see his point despite themselves. Thus, persuasion is “the art of speaking to people who, for whatever reason, are indifferent or resistant to what we have to say.”

Guinness builds his argument on three elements that have served him over his work as an apologist—a deep love of scripture, an advanced understanding of classical Greek rhetoric and his own “cloud of witnesses” (such as, Erasmus, Peter Berger, C. S. Lewis, and C. K. Chesterton) that add strength to his arguments.
  • He promised himself that he would not write a book about apologetics. Not yet. Instead, he would do apologetics. I appreciate that. I appreciate Os Guinness’ concern that he would not become a professional apologist and along the way neglect the actual work of apologetics. But now, after many years of doing such work, he has written a book. And it’s a very good one.

Fool’s Talk introduces the reader to the art of Christian persuasion. Persuasion—that is a word I don’t hear too often. That is a word I don’t think I have ever heard within the walls of the church. Yet apologetics, and the persuasion that lies at its heart, is more important today than ever.

"We are all apologists now, and we stand at the dawn of the grand age of human apologetics, or so some are saying because our wired world and our global era are a time when expressing, presenting, sharing, defending and selling ourselves have become a staple of everyday life for countless millions of people around the world, both Christians and others. Everyone is now everywhere, and everyone can communicate with everyone else from anywhere and at any time, instantly and cheaply."

Guinness considers our time and our context the greatest opportunity for Christians and Christianity since Jesus and his apostles walked the earth.

What we have lost, he believes, is the art of persuasion—the kind of persuasion we see modelled in Jesus, in Paul, and in the Old Testament prophets before them. Jesus is the best example of course. He had a remarkable ability to communicate to people disposed to reject him, and yet to do so in such a way that they had to see his point despite themselves. Thus, persuasion is “the art of speaking to people who, for whatever reason, are indifferent or resistant to what we have to say.” It is the difficult and intimidating work of speaking to people who do not agree with us and are simply not open to what we have to say. And yet the Great Commission calls us to speak to them and to give them the opportunity to respond to the gospel.

One of Guinness’ great concerns about life in a digital world—and this may be a remnant of modernism—is the focus on victory. We want to win arguments and don’t care a whole lot for patient, gentle persuasion. “Our urgent need today is to reunite evangelism and apologetics, to make sure that our best arguments are directed toward winning people and not just winning arguments, and to seek to do all this in a manner that is true to the gospel itself.” That rings true in a Facebook world, doesn’t it?

It must be said that this is not a book about technique. While I believe there is a time and place for such books (my favorite is Greg Koukl’s Tactics), Guinness goes so far as to say that “Technique is the devil’s bait for the Christian persuader today, and at point after point we must turn down its seductions point blank, just as Jesus refused the tempter in the desert.” This book, then, is not technique, but persuasion. Guinness means to persuade you of the value of persuasion. And, by my assessment, he succeeds admirably.

Of all the book’s many strengths, one of the foremost must be the author’s suspicion of technique. Again, it’s not that technique is necessarily wrong, but that it can become a crutch. It can become the lazy man’s apologetics and, in that way, be very ineffective. “The desire for a surefire, foolproof approach to sharing faith is understandable—if only because there are people whom we love so much that we wish them to come to faith decisively, people we love, for whom anything short of success will seem a heartbreaking failure. That is only natural. But as we shall see repeatedly, we live in a fallen world in which any thoughts are thinkable, any arguments are arguable and any doubts are dubitable.” When we admit technique, we admit expertise. And there is a subtle danger here “One danger of our specialized times is that apologetics will become the art of apologists talking to other apologists about apologetics, but never doing it.”

A second strength is the focus on apologetics as a lover’s defense of his beloved. We, the ones who love God, rise to his defense. “Christian advocacy is a lover’s defense, a matter of speaking out and standing up when God is framed unjustly and attacked wrongly.” It is not that God needs us, of course, but that he chooses to use us. “We therefore speak only on behalf of God, we speak under God, and we have no authority or power apart from God. The prophet’s formula is always ‘Thus says the LORD,’ and the worst indictment against the false prophets was for their presumption in claiming to speak for God when their words were entirely their own. In short, the major work in the defense of the faith is about God and by God. It is not about us, and it is not up to us.”

A fair assessment of the book will evaluate its weaknesses. But I see few beyond, perhaps, Guinness’ ecumenism. He is considerably more inclined to ecumenism than I am, and tends to draw from a wider stream of Christianity. Still, what he says is helpful and, in many cases, brilliant.

Eminently quotable and packed full of helpful insights, Fool’s Talk is a thoroughly enjoyable and remarkably helpful book. It is well-written, well-structured, and well-argued. I enthusiastically recommend it.
  • Os Guinness writes from a long personal history of presenting the Christian faith through reason and love with deep understanding of the yearnings and fears that afflict, and the hopes and joys that draw, all kinds of people. This book is not only for Christian apologists, not even only for Christians. It is for all who, with curious minds and hungry hearts, have questions about the meaning of life and whether there even is such meaning. Here brillance and gentleness combine to create a fascinating and rewarding reading experience for anyone who cares to pick it up and read.
  • Guinness takes on the "hows", not the "whats", of Christian apologetics. We are confronted today, as Christians, with aggressive anti-theists (not merely atheists) who demand that faith be abandoned and rejected wherever it may be found. Their inconsistent and ultimately illogical reasoning is covered in greater depth in other works, but Guiness reminds us that how we counter their attacks is as important as the counterarguments themselves. Furthermore, he notes that with the credence and attention given by secular sources to the anti-theists, many non-believers or casual believers (my description, not his) simply aren't interested in theistic or Christian arguments or proofs. But, the topic is of such profound importance that we must be prepared to participate in the debate. Guinness gives us excellent guidelines and frameworks on how to approach this.
  • Os Guinness is one of THE definitive Christian commentators in our culture today. This book carries both complexity of analysis and simplicity of theme. For anyone who likes the ideas of Christianity -- and apologetics -- Fool's Talk is for you!

The explosive narrative of the life, captivity, and trial of Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier who was abducted by the Taliban and whose story has served as a symbol for America's foundering war in Afghanistan

"A riveting journalistic account of Bowe Bergdahl's disastrous--and weirdly poignant--choice to walk off his military base in Afghanistan. . . . A spectacularly good book about an incredibly painful and important topic."--Sebastian Junger, author of Tribe and War

Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl left his platoon's base in eastern Afghanistan in the early hours of June 30, 2009. Since that day, easy answers to the many questions surrounding his case--why did he leave his post? What kinds of efforts were made to recover him from the Taliban? And why, facing a court martial, did he plead guilty to the serious charges against him?--have proved elusive.

Taut in its pacing but sweeping in its scope, American Cipher is the riveting and deeply sourced account of the nearly decade-old Bergdahl quagmire--which, as journalists Matt Farwell and Michael Ames persuasively argue, is as illuminating an episode as we have as we seek the larger truths of how the United States lost its way in Afghanistan. The book tells the parallel stories of a young man's halting coming of age and a nation stalled in an unwinnable war, revealing the fallout that ensued when the two collided a fumbling recovery effort that suppressed intelligence on Bergdahl's true location and bungled multiple opportunities to bring him back sooner; a homecoming that served to deepen the nation's already-vast political fissure; a trial that cast judgment on not only the defendant, but most everyone involved. The book's beating heart is Bergdahl himself--an idealistic, misguided soldier onto whom a nation projected the political and emotional complications of service.

Based on years of exclusive reporting drawing on dozens of sources throughout the military, government, and Bergdahl's family, friends, and fellow soldiers, American Cipher is at once a meticulous investigation of government dysfunction and political posturing, a blistering commentary on America's presence in Afghanistan, and a heartbreaking story of a naïve young man who thought he could fix the world and wound up the tool of forces far beyond his understanding.

American Cipher Bowe Bergdahl and the US Tragedy in Afghanistan eBook Matt Farwell Michael Ames Reviews

  • Theis book strongly ties the story of Bowe Bergdahl to the history of America’s War in Afghanistan. Well-researched, sharply-written, and empathetic to all the actors (almost all) in this uniquely American tragedy — Farwell, et al., bring into sharp focus the ineptitude of US bureaucracy (Army, State Department, CIA), the hyper-political realities, and the limitations of modern-day newsreporting that delayed the return of Bowe Bergdahl and used his desertion and capture to serve interests of the Army, News corporations, the CIA, etc., but not the Bergdahl family, active-duty soldiers, Bowe, or the nation.
  • Just got it in the mail and finished it in two sittings. Excellent journalism; a very interesting and enjoyable read about such a bizarre episode in American history. As well as it’s inportance and significance in our post 9/11 foreign policy.
  • Really a good book and I recommend that you listen to it using Audiobook.
Filled with historical information about subjects the Army for reasons of national security has to keep under public radar during the conflict however the authors exposes the facts in a manner to treat the problem and fix.
I appreciate the courage of the authors and the General who presided over Bergdahl’s General court-martial in this very controversial affair.
This book presents lessons to be learned not that many of them are new.
In light of this book it is sad that Generals like Gen. Lynch and some others who I respect as good have been brought down in political spider webs.
I started it and i felt like I was reading a recent part of history so I continued until I reached the end.
Buy the book and I look forward to your review on same.
  • Whatever you think you know about the Bergdahl story, and about Afghanistan, you'll learn what an extraordinary event his captivity was. The narrative is threaded with heroes, clowns, tragedies, and with the truth about the war.
  • Five stars for this deep dive into the strange odyssey of Bowe Bergdahl, the longest-held American POW since Vietnam.
    — Annie Jacobsen
  • Well researched and great writing.
  • As a veteran, I read this book and was horrified by the way Bergdahl was treated by the Army. This is an incredible story of the Obama Administration and the Trump Administration and how they used Bergdahl to pursue their own agendas. Read it, you will not be disappointed.
  • Bowe Bergdahl walked off a U.S. base in Afghanistan in 2009 and was immediately captured by the Taliban. He languished for five years in captivity before coming home in a prisoner swap in which the U.S. sent five senior Taliban members to Qatar. President Obama proclaimed Bergdahl's return as a great victory, but the public narrative saw it otherwise, believing that we had released five terrorists in exchange for a traitor. But the narrative was at best oversimplified and at worst wrong in many key details. Bergdahl did walk off the base voluntarily, but it was not to collaborate with the enemy, and he paid a terrible price for his foolish decision.

Farwell and Ames have put together a terrific account of the saga, starting with Bergdahl's upbringing in a rigid family in a small town in Idaho, and going through an early attempt to join the Coast Guard (which ended up with his washing out). The book really takes off once Bergdahl walks off the base and gets captured. From there, the description of Berghdahl's awful conditions of captivity intercut with his parents' desperate hopes of U.S. action to rescue him with the sometimes sadly comical bureaucratic maze that U.S. officials (military and civilian) found themselves stuck in.

The authors do not preach, but when all is said and one, I came away feeling that the final disposition of the case was fair and reasonable.
